What is a radar detector? It is an electronic device that tips a motorist off if radar equipment, as used by the police for example is anywhere in the vicinity. The object of the exercise is therefore to avoid radar traps and therefore speeding tickets.

The radar guns used by law enforcement officers is used to measure the speed of a moving vehicle or object, relative to a fixed point. There are two core components to the radar detector, a transmitter which sends out a radar signal, and a receiver which collects returning data.

In its simplest sense, radar is used to work out the distance of one object from another. It stands to reason therefore that if the distance of a moving object can be recorded twice, and the distance moved by the object, the speed of that object can be easily calculated.

Once you’ve got a good head unit installed into your vehicle it’s time to start looking into adding a subwoofer(s) to give your system that extra thump.

The first thing you should take into account is how much available space you have for subwoofers in your car and will you be adding anything later on that will be taking up some of that place. There are a few things to look for before purchasing anything, the first thing you should determine is what size woofers you are planning to put in. Generally subwoofers are considered anything above 8in and usually require an amplifier to power them. The next thing to look for is what amplifier you would be using to power them. Do you have one at home you’re going to be using or will you be purchasing one with your subs? I would generally pick out an amplifier first to know what kind of power rating you’re looking for in a set of woofers. The next step is to determine if it will be a single or a dual voice coil subwoofer setup. Basically the voice coil is the speaker’s voice, it’s a coil of wire attached to the cone of the speaker that when you add power and a signal to produces a magnetic field that reacts with the speakers magnet to move the cone producing sound.

A car antenna is designed to receive broadcast signals coming from transmitters located in close proximity to the car. It decodes these signals and turns them into sounds and images for radio and television. There are also types of antennas that work as secondary receivers to enhance the function of a car’s pre-installed antenna. There are two types of car antennas: the external antenna and the car internal antenna.

External antennas, as the name implies, are installed on the outer part of the car – for instance, on the hood, the rear or the roof of the car. They are mounted on telescoping fiberglass or a metal pole that is attached to a stationary base. Many external antennas are omni-directional but they can also be tilted in the general direction of a radio signal to obtain better reception.

The time for Audi to shine in its section of the automotive industry has finally come. The RS6 is back, but this time it’s as a sedan version and it’s got the competition worried. The 2008 Avant version wasn’t exactly what most enthusiasts were looking forward to but with such an immense amount of horsepower and torque, this RS6 is seeking the title as king of sedans like never before.

What lies beneath the hood is an FSI direct injection, dry-sump lubricated, twin-turbocharged V10. All of this adds up to 580 HP @ 6,250 RPM and 479 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500 RPM. This Audi, like others, is electronically limited at 155 MPH. Unlike others though, it has an option to raise the electronic limit to 173 MPH. Before it even reaches those type of speeds though, it completes the first part, also known as the 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

If you are currently looking for a luxury saloon car and are finding the task of narrowing your choice down from hundreds to just one, then there is a rather important bit of information I have that may be of interest to you. Today’s most popular prestige saloon brand is obviously BMW, who sell thousands of units in the United Kingdom alone on an annual basis. However, if you knew of a way of trading up to a more prestigious brand whilst spending the same amount of money, most people would jump at the chance.

If you are looking to spend £50,000 on a luxury saloon, you are likely to be looking at the BMW 7 Series, which in its own right is a fantastic range of saloon cars. However, for the same money you would be able to get hold of a Maserati Quattroporte that was perhaps only a year old and had very low mileage.

How often should you change the oil in your car?

If you automatically guess 3,000 miles you could be wrong.

When I was 16 and bought my first cool car, my dad taught me to change the oil every 3,000 miles, no matter what! He taught me that because my Grandfather taught him.

But is it really necessary?

I think that the “3,000 Mile Oil Change” theory made sense years ago, but with most recent cars, 5,000 miles is probably plenty. However, there are a few vehicles that may go as high as 12,000 miles between oil changes.

Many new cars have a technology where the car actually tells the driver when to change the oil.

Cars that currently have this variable/indicator light are GM, Honda and Chrysler.

Buying a car can be one of the most intimidating experiences in life. But it doesn’t have to be! Preparation is the key! Do your research; know what you want, and most importantly what you can afford! You may be tempted to first find the vehicle you want and then figure out how to pay for it later.

Any loan can have an affordable monthly payment if you extend the term long enough, but that can add significantly to the total cost of the car. Focus on the total amount financed rather than on the monthly payment alone! Provide as much cash up front to avoid the car being worth less than the loan.

There is a large part of the car-buying population who won’t even consider buying a new car. In fact, used car sales outnumber new car sales three to one!

Converting your car from non-turbo performance to a turbo car performance in a proper way would cost thousands of dollars. Why? This is because you would have to replace almost everything when converting your car from a non-turbo to turbo. First, you would have to choose an engine and the possibilities here would be endless. If you choose to stick with what you have and it would most likely be an aspirated one then you would have to adjust the level of compression level to 7.5:1 so that your engine would be able to handle the heat and the pressure that turbo boost would generate. You would have to purchase stainless steel valves for the cylinder head to attain durability and forged pistons and total-seal rings to ensure reliability and performance. Not to mention having the car’s fuel management changed to fuel injection.

After preparing the car for turbo conversion and installing a turbo charger then you would have to purchase a lot more parts. Not only would it be a source of a head ache because there are so many to choose from, but it would also be very expensive. You would have to buy a waste gate, fabricate a turbo exhaust manifest, boost controllers, boost valves, compressor by pass valves and inter cooler plumbing to name a few. Fuel injector parts are also usually upgraded. This is why it is tempting to just partially convert the car; this however may result in you spending even more money than just properly converting the non-turbo car into a high performance turbo car.
